Civic and News Literacy for Engaged Citizen Scholars

This training will empower classroom teachers to develop essential skills in their students featured in the new C3 Framework for College, Career and Civic Life

This training will include:

Helping students understand core First Amendment values and their rights and responsibilities as citizens, especially as consumers and publishers of information and the news in a digital world.


News literacy skills including:
  • Helping students identify what information is news
  • Helping students identify what information is credible
  • Helping students identify fairness and bias
  • Helping students identify what information is “actionable”
  •  Strategies for improving student civic engagement

Developed in partnership with the Center for News Literacy in the School of Journalism at Stony Brook University, this training will allow for guided exploration of the News Literacy Curriculum as well as opportunities for each participant to work with content and instructional experts to tailor turn-key resources and strategies to meet their own students’ instructional needs and learning outcomes.

An optional 3 graduate credit opportunity through Stony Brook University is also available. If you are interested in learning about the graduate credit option please e-mail David Scott at David.Scott@stonybrook.edu.

Teachers not seeking graduate credit will be provided a certificate of completion for the Institute.  Note that in-service credit is awarded at the discretion of your school district.  Applicants should obtain prior approval, if required, by their school district prior to enrollment.
