National History Day Workshop for Teachers

Open to teachers from New York, Vermont, and beyond, this day-long workshop serves as both an introduction to the History Day program and as an opportunity for experienced teachers to expand their involvement. 

National History Day® encourages students in grades 6-12 to explore local, state, national, and world history. After selecting a historical topic that relates to an annual theme, students conduct extensive research by using libraries, archives, museums, and oral history interviews. They analyze and interpret their findings, draw conclusions about their topics' significance in history, and create final projects that present their work. These projects can be entered into a series of competitions, from the local to the national level, where they are evaluated by professional historians and educators.

The workshop is free, but space is limited and pre-registration is required. Participating teachers can either pack a lunch or eat at America’s Fort Café during the lunch break.

The workshop includes:

• “An Introduction to the National History Day Program” led by Victoria Hughes, Vermont State History Day Coordinator.

• “How to Incorporate History Day into Your Curriculum” led by Nick Costa, 7th grade teacher, Gouverneur Middle School, Gouverneur, New York.

• “Introduction to the 2019 National History Day Theme ‘Triumph and Tragedy in History,” led by Rich Strum, Director of Academic Programs at Fort Ticonderoga.

• “Utilizing Regional Sources for History Day Projects” led by Devin Lander, New York State Historian.
