Fort Orange Teacher Workshop: Teaching New York’s Dutch History through Primary Resources

The New York State Museum is pleased to offer a one-day teacher workshop in which educators use primary source materials and artifacts to explore New York State’s Dutch roots. Many different disciplines come together to explore the character-shaping and lasting effect the Dutch presence here in the seventeenth century has had on New York State over four centuries. A variety of primary documents, archaeological sites, three-dimensional artifacts, and historic artwork all provide evidence for what life was like in New York during this period. 

During this workshop educators will engage with archaeologists, archivists, and historians who study colonial New York and will present different ways resources can be used to inform and excite students about historic New York. Classroom-ready lessons and access to digitized records will provide educators with ways to engage their students directly with primary resources that support the New York State Learning Standards. Participants will earn 7 hours of CTLE credit.
