Questar III BOCES in partnership with The Institute for Curriculum Services presents a day of content exploration and best practices for teaching about Jews and Judaism. Gain knowledge and tools to confidently teach about these topics when they cross New York State Social Studies Standards. Throughout the day, attendees will participate in interactive workshops that are grounded in primary sources and receive classroom-ready resources that will enable them to strengthen students’ knowledge and skills on these topics. This professional learning day will be useful to teachers of Global History and US History, as well as to ELA teachers who address these topics in the literature they assign.

8:45 – 9:45 AM                       Teaching about Judaism

Explore one of the world’s oldest religions through learning about Judaism’s beliefs, behaviors, and experiences of belonging and examine a framework for teaching about all religions to cultivate religious literacy.

9:45 – 10:00 AM                     BREAK

10:00 AM – 12:00 PM             History of European Antisemitism

Where does antisemitism come from? This is a question that students often ask when learning about the Holocaust. Gain the knowledge and resources to help students better understand the history of this form of hatred.

12:00 – 1:00 PM                     LUNCH (provided)

1:00 – 2:00 PM                       Jewish Immigration to the U.S.: 1880 - 1924

This session will explore Jewish immigration to the United States in the early 20th century and its relation to the larger immigrant story of the U.S. Learn the context for Jewish immigration between 1880-1924, discuss the various push and pull factors that brought Jewish immigrants to America, understand the cultural pressures and contributions of Jewish Americans, and grapple with the repercussions of the 1924 Immigration Act.
