Capital District Council for the Social Studies (Albany, NY)
The CDCSS is planning a Mini-Conference to be held on Saturday, October 5th from 8:30 am - 2:30 pm
All presentations will last approximately 45 minutes, with breaks in between. We will also include a round table session with all participants with mini-presentations from historic and cultural institutions from the area.
Transportation and Migration
Transportation and migration have shaped American history in powerful ways. During the Revolution, Henry Knox used bateaux and sleds to move cannons, helping secure victory. The Erie Canal later transformed trade and travel, using boats and barges to connect the Great Lakes to the Atlantic. A Revolutionary War gunboat found at Ground Zero reminds us of New York’s strategic past. Meanwhile, waves of immigrants entered through Ellis Island, and places like Fort Ontario where WWII refugees were sheltered and ultimately embraced by the surrounding community, reflecting America’s evolving role as a haven for people from throughout the globe.
